Alex Zanardi: A Grand Tribute to Remember the Unforgettable Former Formula 1 Driver

The multipurpose sports center in Castel Maggiore—a town in the province of Bologna where the unforgettable former Formula 1 driver, who passed away on May 1, was born—has been named in memory of Alex Zanardi. The ceremony took place on Saturday in the presence of local officials and his son Nicolò.

“We need to constantly strive to uphold the values of sport that Alex embodied throughout his life. Throughout every stage of his life, he demonstrated that strength, that tenacity, that pride, that dignity, that passion, and that humanity—qualities we desperately need. His memories, his thoughts, and his example are in the air—and now, even more so, in a specific place,” said Sports Minister Andrea Abodi in a video message.

“This naming,” said Mayor Luca Vignoli, “is a tribute to the affection we feel for our fellow citizen, but it is also recognition of a great sports champion. Alex was never daunted by the adversities that overwhelmed him, and in doing so, he taught us that life is the continuous exploration of the impossible. Not the pursuit of a linear future, but the building of the unexpected. So today, we are naming this sports center—the most important sports facility in his and our town of Castel Maggiore—after Alex Zanardi. We do so with the hope that all athletes who pass through here will be inspired by his tenacity and his dedication to his work.”
