Matteo Berrettini Opens Up About Jannik Sinner

Matteo Berrettini spoke about Jannik Sinner following the world No. 1’s decision to take a break until 2027. The South Tyrolean tennis player, who hasn’t taken the court since the Wimbledon final, is struggling with a knee injury that has been plaguing him for months and for which he has yet to find a solution.
The Roman athlete is no stranger to the frustration of physical setbacks, and at a press conference in Shanghai, he didn’t mince words when commenting on his friend’s situation: “I didn’t expect this decision, but Jannik has the best mindset I’ve ever seen, so if he made this choice, it’s because it was the right one for him. Plus, he has the best team possible, so I’m sure he’ll come back stronger.”
“I know what it means to be injured,” Berrettini continued. And the last thing you want is for someone to ask you when you’ll be back. I know how mentally tough it is, and I’d never ask Jannik what’s wrong. I texted him that I was waiting for him, that everyone was waiting for him. Unfortunately, this year we’ve lost the best player in the world.”
Despite the worrying situation, experts are urging calm. Dr. Fabrizio Tencone, director of the Isokinetic Center in Turin, reassured fans in an interview with *La Gazzetta dello Sport*: “If it had been something very serious—a fracture or damage—the orthopedist would certainly have opted for surgery. The fact that we’re talking about conservative management confirms that the injury is minor.” The doctor then added: “The treatment for tendinopathy is regaining strength. The key is strengthening. He has a highly skilled staff. It will take work and time, but in the end, he’ll be healthy and competitive again.”
