A neglected cavity, an infection that spread to his lungs, and admission to the intensive care unit: Daniel Osvaldo’s life was seriously endangered by an infection that, stemming from a dental problem, had very serious consequences. The Argentine news site Infobae reports on the incident.

The former striker for Roma, Inter, and Juventus—who also played for the Italian national team—was admitted to the hospital in critical condition. The infection had spread to his lungs, taking advantage of his weakened immune system. During his hospital stay, doctors extracted the tooth responsible for the problem, and subsequently, the condition of the former soccer player—now 40 years old and a musician—began to improve significantly.

Osvaldo is still in the hospital, where he continues to receive treatment and is under observation. His progress, however, is encouraging, as he himself confirmed: “I feel better and am getting better every day.”

The ordeal also seems to have prompted him to make an important decision regarding his health. “I haven’t smoked for two weeks, and I intend to never smoke again,” declared the former forward, announcing his intention to quit cigarettes for good.

If his condition continues to improve, Osvaldo could be transferred to a regular hospital ward in the coming days. Should he continue to improve, he could then be discharged and continue his recovery at home.
