Champions League: A Nightmare Night for Inter and Napoli

Two painful losses, two high-scoring matches, and two disappointments for the Italian teams in the Champions League. Inter and Napoli both fell on Matchday 2 of the group stage, complicating their European campaigns. Chivu’s Nerazzurri succumbed at San Siro to a dominant Bruges side, which won 4-3 at the end of a spectacular match full of twists and turns. The Azzurri, on the other hand, collapsed on the road against Villarreal: Rrahmani’s early goal wasn’t enough, as the Spaniards mounted a comeback and won 3-1. Two defeats with different dynamics, but both marked by defensive errors, lapses in concentration, and the need to bounce back quickly. For both teams, the road to qualification has become more complicated.
Chivu’s team suffered another setback following their loss to Real Madrid at the Bernabéu. This time, Bruges is celebrating, having delivered a top-notch performance and capitalizing at the decisive moments of the match. Nicolò Tresoldi, a 2004-born forward sought after by both the Italian and German national teams, broke the deadlock by putting the Belgians ahead on a penalty kick. Inter tried to respond and tied the game with a goal by Lautaro Martinez, but the evening soon turned into a difficult comeback attempt.
In the second half, Tresoldi stole the show, capping off his standout performance with two more goals and putting the Nerazzurri defense in serious trouble. Lautaro’s second goal kept Inter’s hopes alive, and in the closing minutes, they tried to get back into the game for good. In stoppage time, Vermant and Bonny also scored, but the Nerazzurri forward’s goal wasn’t enough to avoid defeat. The final result is a tough one: Club Brugge wins 4-3 at San Siro, leaving Inter with more than a few questions regarding their defense and their ability to handle critical moments in European matches.
It was also a bitter evening for Napoli, who fell 3-1 to Villarreal at the Estadio de la Cerámica. The Azzurri got off to a good start, took the lead, and looked poised to control the match, but ended up paying dearly for a lapse in the first half. With McTominay back in the starting lineup, Napoli took the lead in the 8th minute. The play began with a nice move by Gilmour, who set up Rrahmani for a header. The ball hit the crossbar, but the Kosovar defender was quickest to react to the rebound and made it 1-0 with a right-footed shot that left Junior, who was in goal in place of Gulacsi, with no chance. The Azzurri nearly doubled their lead in the 22nd minute, when Hojlund also hit the crossbar. It seemed like the prelude to a positive evening, but the match suddenly took a different turn.
In the 24th minute, Mikautadze capitalized on a short backpass by Politano, beat Milinkovic-Savic, and tied the score. Napoli felt the blow, and just two minutes later, they fell behind: Mouriño scored with a great right-footed shot from distance, capitalizing on a moment of weakness by Massimiliano Allegri’s men. In just a few minutes, the Azzurri went from leading to trailing, jeopardizing a match that up to that point had seemed well within their grasp. McTominay and De Bruyne tried to shake up the team, while on the other end, Gerard Moreno forced Milinkovic-Savic into a save.
In the second half, Allegri looked for new ways to bring the match back into balance. In the 72nd minute, he also brought on Lucca, pairing him with Hojlund to boost the attack. Napoli tried to push forward, and shortly after the 80th minute, Hojlund once again tested Junior, who responded with a decisive save. However, it was Oluwaseyi who sealed the deal in the 86th minute with a left-footed shot that made it 3-1 and dashed Napoli’s last hopes of a comeback. Villarreal can thus celebrate an important victory, while Napoli returns home empty-handed.
