Kimi Antonelli: Ferrari fans are also in an uproar following the latest revelations

Toto Wolff’s comments about Kimi Antonelli have reignited a debate that has followed the Bologna-born driver practically since he began winning in Formula 1. Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Mercedes team principal recounted how, during Antonelli’s early races in Formula 1, there was no shortage of extremely harsh criticism directed at the Italian, sparking inevitable reactions among fans.
According to Wolff, many were ready to write off the young talent when results were slow to materialize: “There were those who argued he wasn’t yet ready for a car like the Mercedes, and some even went so far as to doubt that he deserved a spot in Formula 1.” Given the season Antonelli is having and the world title now within reach, those assessments now seem decidedly off the mark.
The Mercedes team principal’s comments sparked reactions from fans, but it was the Ferrari fans who made their voices heard the loudest. In fact, many couldn’t help but recall one of the most talked-about “sliding door” moments of recent years.
As the months have passed, various behind-the-scenes details have emerged regarding Antonelli’s failed move to Maranello when he was still a promising youngster. This story continues to weigh heavily on Ferrari supporters, especially now that the Bolognese driver is dominating the championship with Mercedes. Not surprisingly, among the most widespread comments on social media, some are wondering how Ferrari’s recent history would have changed if that gamble had been taken.
On this front, reports have resurfaced in recent months suggesting that Antonelli’s name had been proposed to Ferrari as early as his karting days, only to be denied final approval. Maurizio Arrivabene, who was team principal at the Maranello team at the time, later explained the decision, noting that the Ferrari organization back then “wasn’t set up to mentor and develop such young drivers.”
In the meantime, however, Mercedes has reaped the rewards of its foresight. Wolff attributes much of his driver’s growth to a radical shift in his mental approach: “The real difference has been the maturity he’s gained in tackling his work and the races. Today, he’s found his balance and the best way to express his talent.”
