Tragedy in France: Young Rugby Player Dies at Just 23

The rugby world is mourning the death of Axel, a rugby player who passed away at just 23 years old. The young man suffered a sudden illness during the match between US Pays de Gex Rugby and Rhône Sportif; he was rushed to the hospital but, unfortunately, could not be saved.
US Pays de Gex Rugby announced Axel’s death: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Axel, our 23-year-old player who died after suffering a sudden illness during a match. Our first thoughts go out to Axel’s family and loved ones, to whom we extend our most sincere condolences and our deepest sympathy during this time of profound grief.”
“While US Pays de Gex Rugby was facing Rhône Sportif on the fifth matchday of the Régionale 1 reserve league, Axel suffered a sudden illness toward the end of the match. Emergency responders, who arrived promptly on the scene, administered first aid and performed CPR. Rushed to the hospital, Axel sadly passed away despite the doctors’ best efforts.”
“This loss, as sudden as it is tragic, has left the entire club in deep sorrow and a state of immense shock. Our thoughts also go out to his teammates, coaches, management, all club members, the players of Rhône Sportif, the referees, and everyone who was present and witnessed this tragic event,” the statement reads.
The club immediately contacted the French Rugby Federation, and psychological support has been made available to anyone who needs it. French Minister of Sports Martina Ferrari also joined in expressing her condolences: “Following the passing of 17-year-old Cléa, we learn with immense sorrow of the loss of Axel, 23, a player for US Pays de Gex, who collapsed toward the end of the match.”
“I also express my deepest sympathy to the entire rugby family, once again struck by a profound loss. The French Rugby Federation has already set up a psychological support service. In the face of tragic events such as these, we must offer our full support and solidarity to the victims and to those left behind to cope with the void.”
