He got out of the car to set up the warning triangle and was struck by a vehicle: he died at age 21 on the A1

A young man, just 21 years old, lost his life after being struck by an SUV. The tragedy occurred shortly after midnight on the A1, near the Melegnano toll plaza, on the lane heading toward Milan. The young man had gotten out of his car—which had come to a stop following an accident—to set up the warning triangle and alert other drivers to the presence of the stationary vehicle. Just then, an SUV approached and struck him.
His condition appeared to be extremely critical immediately. Despite the efforts of emergency responders and his urgent transport to the hospital, the 21-year-old died shortly after being admitted. According to an initial account reported by the newspaper Il Cittadino di Lodi, the young man was behind the wheel of a Volvo in which four friends were also traveling.
The group was traveling on the highway toward San Giuliano Milanese when, for reasons yet to be determined, the driver reportedly lost control of the car. The car then reportedly struck the New Jersey barrier—the barrier separating the two highway lanes—with great force, sustaining damage severe enough to prevent it from continuing on.
At that point, the 21-year-old reportedly decided to get out of the car to set up the warning triangle and alert other passing vehicles. It was precisely while doing this that the second accident occurred—the one with fatal consequences. A vehicle traveling along the same lane struck the young man. The force of the impact threw him onto the asphalt, causing extremely serious injuries. His friends who were with him immediately raised the alarm, calling for emergency assistance.
The 118 emergency dispatch center dispatched a medical team from Milan, which arrived on the scene to provide initial treatment to the injured man. The paramedics attempted to stabilize the young man’s condition before arranging for his transfer as a code red emergency to Predabissi Hospital in Vizzolo. Unfortunately, all attempts to save him proved futile. The young man died shortly after arriving at the emergency room due to the extremely severe injuries sustained in the accident.
The Lodi Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the tragedy. Traffic police officers are working to accurately reconstruct what happened, starting with the initial accident involving the Volvo and continuing through the subsequent collision with the SUV. The investigation will aim to clarify the circumstances under which the young man lost control of the car and determine any liability for the collision that cost him his life.
