“Go make some pasta with sauce,” but also “Go vacuum.” These are two of the sexist remarks directed at the referee of the Como-Venezia match, Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi, which could be heard in the background during DAZN’s broadcast of the match, which the Como team narrowly won.

The match suddenly became complicated for Ferrieri Caputi, right under the watchful eye of referee coordinator Daniele Orsato, who was present in the stands at Sinigaglia Stadium and appeared particularly upset at the end of the match over an incident that had a significant impact. The referee’s difficulties were concentrated into a three-minute span around the 30-minute mark of the first half. With the score tied at 0-0, Ferrieri Caputi initially awarded a penalty kick to the visiting team, only to reverse her decision after being called to the monitor by VAR officials Cosso and Giua. In her first Serie A appearance of the season, the referee had correctly called a handball by Milla at the edge of the box, on a ball that came in following a challenge between Da Cunha and Busio.

The decision to rescind the penalty sparked protests from Nicola and his players. Como took advantage of the situation to increase the pressure, coming close to taking the lead through Douvikas, whose shot went just a few centimeters wide of the post. The goal came just before halftime, however: in the 43rd minute, the referee awarded the home team a penalty kick for a foul by Juan Jesus, and from the spot, captain Da Cunha sent Stankovic the wrong way, scoring the 1-0 goal that decided the match.

With this victory, earned on Matchday 10 of Serie A, Fabregas’s team moves up to 23 points, consolidates fourth place, and remains in hot pursuit of Roma (24) and Inter (25). The Larians, who enjoyed nearly 80% possession, entered the match on the heels of three consecutive wins by a margin of at least two goals—a club record in the top flight. For Nicola’s Venezia, however, it was another loss: the team from Venice remains in last place with just three points, hampered by a lack of offensive firepower and an inability to turn counterattacks into concrete scoring chances.
