Eye Popped Out of Its Socket: Player Saved by Line Judge Who Administered Anesthesia

Moments of terror during a Serie D match, where a very serious on-field collision nearly turned into a tragedy. In the 43rd minute of the first half of the match between Trastevere and Anzio, part of the 10th round of the league, a defender from the home team was left lying unconscious on the field after a violent collision with an opponent. It was a horrific fall, with significant injuries—especially to the face—that required immediate medical attention.
The player lost consciousness following the collision. The situation immediately appeared very serious, and it was the quick thinking of an assistant referee that made all the difference; he intervened promptly, even before the arrival of the 118 emergency medical team, who were on site with an ambulance. The linesman, an anesthesiologist by profession, administered first aid, managing to stabilize the player and helping to save his life.
The player subsequently regained consciousness and was transported to San Camillo Hospital in Rome for further evaluation. The CT scan came back clear, but the consequences of the collision were nonetheless very severe. The defender suffered several facial fractures, and according to witnesses in the stands, the impact was so violent that it caused his eye socket to dislocate. It was a shocking sight that caused great concern among those present.
The player is, however, out of danger and will undergo further tests to assess the extent of his injuries. That evening, the entire team went to the hospital to visit him and show their support after the terrifying incident. Following the accident, the match did not resume. The referee consulted with the captains of both teams to determine whether conditions allowed for play to continue, but both agreed that the game should be stopped. It was an inevitable decision given what had happened.
