Zverev lashes out again after his loss to Musetti: Jannik Sinner is a nightmare

Alexander Zverev is starting to lose his patience. The German tennis player, the new world No. 1, showed signs of frustration after his loss to Lorenzo Musetti, which knocked him out of the Paris Masters 1000. Zverev, who is clearly feeling the strain of a long season, gave a clear analysis of the match during his press conference.
“I played very poorly; he played very well. Let’s just keep it simple—that’s how it went,” said Zverev, who then expressed irritation at the criticism regarding his top ranking. “Why do I have to justify my position? Stress? I don’t know if you can call it stress. To be honest, I’ve been a little annoyed these past few days, because reaching the world No. 1 ranking is something I think every player dreams of.”
After overtaking Jannik Sinner, however, he received more criticism than praise: “It seems to me that I’m the only No. 1 of all time who has to explain whether it’s right for me to hold this position. I deserve to be here; even today I lost.”
And again: “I don’t think others have had to justify themselves as much as I’ve had to; it’s very annoying. It’s clear that I need to improve everything if we consider today’s match—it was perhaps one of my worst matches in recent months.”
Musetti secured the victory in two sets, with a score of 7-6, 6-2. The player from Carrara secured the victory in the first-set tiebreak, which lasted over an hour: down 2-5, he strung together five consecutive points in a textbook comeback. In the second set, he broke serve early to take a 3-1 lead, and from there the German seemed unable to respond. Now the Italian will face France’s Luca Van Assche in the round of 16.
