Tiger Woods was involved in a traffic accident on Friday afternoon in Jupiter Island, Florida, around 2 p.m. (local time). According to reports from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, his Land Rover overturned after he hit, at high speed, a trailer pulled by a truck.

Subjected to checks, the 50-year-old was stopped and transferred to the Martin County Jail, where he will have to stay for at least eight hours to allow for investigations into the dynamics of the accident. Alcohol tests reportedly came back negative, while the golfer refused to submit to a urine test.

This is not the first such incident in the champion’s life. In 2021 Woods was the victim of a serious accident near Los Angeles, when his SUV went off the road at high speed: he suffered multiple fractures in his lower limbs and serious problems in his ankles, going so far as to risk amputation of a leg. Since then, he has taken part in 11 tournaments, never really approaching the top positions on the few occasions he has managed to complete the 72 holes.

A similar precedent also dates back to 2017, when he was found by Florida police asleep at the wheel of his car, which was stopped on the side of the road and had signs of a collision. In that case he pleaded guilty to reckless driving, explaining the incident by misuse of painkillers.

The news of yet another accident did not go unnoticed even by Donald Trump, the golfer’s longtime friend: “All I know is that there was a bad collision and I’m very sorry. He is a great friend and a great person, but he is going through a difficult time. I prefer not to add more,” he told reporters.
