The WNBA Draft was staged overnight in New York City. Azzi Fudd was named as the first overall pick of the WNBA draft by the Dallas franchise. The former UConn star signed a $500,000 contract and will, therefore, be a new Wings.

“I really don’t know how to describe the excitement I felt. I don’t think I have fully realized it yet. I could never have imagined it. The feeling of sitting with my family, with Morgan (Valley), hearing my name spoken, going up there … a surreal feeling,” Azzi Fudd’s own words reported by ESPN.

Azzi Fudd will reunite with her former Huskies teammate, Paige Bueckers, who was the Wings’ first-round pick last year. Paige Bueckers, who along with Azzi Fudd gave UConn a record seven first overall picks, was present at the draft along with Azzi Fudd’s teammates.

UCLA stars Lauren Betts and Gabriela Jaquez were chosen in the top five just over a week after leading the Bruins to their first NCAA title. The new collective bargaining agreement, ratified last month, provided huge salary increases for the freshmen. Azzi Fudd will collect nearly seven times more than Paige Bueckers earned last season as a first-round pick.
