Brito has died; Brazil mourns the legendary defender who won the World Cup alongside Pelé

Brito, the legendary center back for the 1970 World Cup-winning Brazilian national team, has died at the age of 86. The news was announced by the Brazilian Football Confederation, which did not provide further details regarding the cause of death.
Between 1964 and 1972, Brito made 61 appearances for the Seleção, forming one of the most reliable defensive partnerships of the era alongside Wilson Piazza. He was a key player on the Brazilian team that won the 1970 World Cup, defeating Italy 4-1 in the final played at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, as part of the squad led by Pelé.
In an official statement, the president of the Brazilian Football Confederation, Samir Xaud, remembered Brito as “one of the greatest defenders in the history of Brazilian soccer,” emphasizing that his contribution to the 1970 World Cup triumph will remain indelibly etched in the nation’s memory. Xaud also paid tribute to the former player, expressing the hope that his fighting spirit will continue to serve as an example for future generations and for the players who will take part in the upcoming World Cup.
Brazil, the most successful national team in the history of the competition with five World Cup titles, will begin its quest for a sixth world title on Saturday against Morocco.
