The United States earns its second consecutive victory and secures a spot in the Round of 16 well ahead of schedule. Following their decisive opening-match victory over Paraguay, Mauricio Pochettino’s team also defeated Australia 2-0, confirming their dominance despite the absence of Christian Pulisic, who remained on the bench but was unavailable.

The Americans dominated the early going, immediately putting pressure on the Socceroos. It was a mistake by the Australian defense that led to the opening goal: in the 11th minute, on a cross from the right, Burgess unintentionally deflected the ball into his own net while trying to beat his opponents to it, repeating what had already happened against Paraguay in the previous match.

The U.S. continued to press and came close to doubling their lead on several occasions through McKennie and Balogun. Australia tried to respond through Leckie, but in the 43rd minute came the goal that definitively decided the match: at the end of a beautiful team play, Freeman scored the 2-0 from close range, a goal confirmed after a VAR review.

In the second half, the script remained the same. The Americans maintained possession, consistently hovering around 70%, and controlled the pace of the match. Only in the closing minutes did Australia show signs of improvement thanks to Irankunda’s efforts and the entry of Volpato, who injected more energy into the offensive play.

The Socceroos’ reaction, however, wasn’t enough to get back into the game. After a long stoppage for extra time—made necessary in part by some physical issues experienced by referee Zwayer—the match ended 2-0 in favor of the home team. With six points in the standings, the United States has now secured its spot in the Round of 16.
