Not Like This: Insults and Threats Against Marco Palestra

It seemed like Marco Palestra’s move to Inter was all but done: the fullback, who had an excellent season on loan at Cagliari, was supposed to replace Denzel Dumfries (who chose Real Madrid) under Cristian Chivu—but then everything changed.
Chelsea’s involvement derailed the deal, and Palestra—following direct intervention by Blues coach Xabi Alonso—decided to move to London for approximately 55 million euros. Some fans didn’t take it well and vented their frustration on social media.
In recent days, several accounts—often with made-up names and no profile pictures—have posted insults and threats against the young player. “Choosing money at 21 is truly sad—what a small-minded man,” declared Emy, echoed by Carlo1908: “Rejecting Inter and choosing Chelsea for money… I can’t wait to boo you when you play for the national team.” Hundreds of messages like these are circulating online.
Guido Angelozzi, former sporting director of Cagliari who recently moved to Spezia, revealed some behind-the-scenes details about Palestra: “Chelsea and City had been tracking him for a year; they were always at the stadium, both in Cagliari and on the road. They were calling me constantly; they wanted to know everything.”
“They obviously already had the stats, but they were looking for insights into the young man’s character and qualities. Marco is a wonderful person—truly decent and very intelligent. He bonded deeply with his teammates at Cagliari; he won everyone’s hearts. As soon as the coach saw him, he put him in right away—he’s a very strong player. I was hoping he’d go to Inter when I spoke with him a few days ago; he told me he was heading to the Nerazzurri.”
