Nuno Borges: Who Is Jannik Sinner’s Opponent in the Second Round at Wimbledon?
After overcoming Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round—not without some anxiety—Jannik Sinner already knows the name of the second player he will face as he sets out to defend the title he won at Wimbledon twelve months ago. It is Portugal’s Nuno Borges, who defeated American Tristan Boyer 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 in his first-round match.
Born in Maia, in the district of Porto, on February 19, 1997, Nuno Borges is currently ranked No. 48 in the ATP rankings and is the top-ranked player from his home country, Portugal. He began his professional career at age 17 on the ITF circuit, winning his first tournament in 2017 in Setúbal by defeating João Monteiro 6-3, 6-0. At the ITF level, he has won a total of ten tournaments, and since 2021 he has also begun winning at the ATP Challenger level, claiming victory in six competitions (including the Barletta Open in 2022).
In doubles as well, Borges has achieved more than respectable results in both ITF and Challenger tournaments, with a total of sixteen titles won primarily alongside Francisco Cabral, with whom he has shared fifteen trophies (he won one, however, partnered with American Alex Rybakov).
After making a permanent move to the main ATP Tour, Nuno Borges triumphed in Båstad, Sweden, in 2024, earning the satisfaction of defeating Rafa Nadal—who was in the twilight of his career but still a dangerous opponent—in the final. His only doubles victory on the ATP Tour, however, came two years earlier in Cascais, partnering with Cabral: they defeated Maximo Gonzalez and André Goransson 6-2, 6-3.
His best result at a Grand Slam tournament is reaching the fourth round, a feat he achieved at the Australian Open and the US Open in 2024. In Melbourne, he defeated Maximilian Marterer, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and Grigor Dimitrov before losing to Daniil Medvedev, while at Flushing Meadows, he defeated Federico Coria, Thanasi Kokkinakis, and Jakub Mensik before falling, once again, to Medvedev.
There has been only one previous match between Jannik Sinner and Nuno Borges, dating back to the 2022 Sofia tournament: in their second-round match, the South Tyrolean prevailed 6-3, 6-4, advancing in a tournament that saw him reach the semifinals before being sidelined by an injury during his match against Holger Rune.
