There’s been a lot of debate over what happened during the England-Norway match, specifically the incident surrounding Bellingham’s goal that tied the score at 1-1. The controversial play began with a clearance by Norwegian goalkeeper Nyland. According to the Scandinavian team’s account, the ball reportedly grazed the spidercam (the camera suspended above the field) before falling back to the ground, slightly altering its trajectory. A minimal deflection, but potentially decisive: the English regained possession and, just eight seconds later, scored through their number 10.

The incident sparked an immediate reaction from Norway’s head coach, Stale Solbakken, who protested to the referee as early as the end of the first half. At the press conference, he reiterated his conviction: “Many on the bench noticed it right away. The ball suddenly fell from the sky; it seems clear to me that there was contact.”

Shortly after the match ended, FIFA responded by posting a video of the play and an explanation based on data from the Connected Ball via its social media channels. According to FIFA, the sensor inside the ball did not record any “spike in the ball’s heart rate” while it was in flight, and consequently, there is no evidence of contact with the spidercam’s cable that could have altered its trajectory.

The official explanation, however, was not enough to quell the controversy. In fact, protests continue on social media and in major Norwegian media outlets over an incident that is bound to remain a topic of debate for a long time to come and which, according to many, may have had a decisive impact on the outcome of the match.
