ATP 500 Washington: Lorenzo Musetti Celebrates After Beating Vukic to Reach the Quarterfinals
Lorenzo Musetti continues his comeback after a difficult few months, reaching the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 tournament in Washington. After advancing to the next round following Matteo Arnaldi’s withdrawal, the Tuscan tennis player defeated Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic in the round of 16 in three sets and just over two and a quarter hours of play, with a final score of 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
The match got off to an ideal start for Musetti, who took a 3-0 lead thanks to a break in the second game after a 10-point rally. This proved to be the decisive break, as Vukic didn’t manage to convert two break points of his own until the ninth game. The Italian closed out the set on his second set point, then immediately took a one-game lead at the start of the second set. The Australian, however, evened the score at 4-4 and ultimately took the set 7-5. A very tense match was decided in the decisive set in less than 40 minutes, with the final three games featuring three breaks and counterbreaks that ultimately favored the player from Carrara.
The victory over Vukic takes on special significance given the circumstances Musetti has been facing. The Tuscan tennis player has endured a difficult few months due to a series of physical issues, so much so that he even missed Wimbledon, where he was absent from the draw along with Carlos Alcaraz. It was a long and arduous road to recovery, which the world No. 15 described in a recent interview with the *Financial Times*: “It’s been a difficult year, especially in Australia, when I was truly at the peak of my form. The hardest part—more than the pain, the hours of physical therapy and rehabilitation, the visits to various specialists, or the fact that I was sidelined—was simply accepting what was happening.”
On a mental level, Musetti explained what approach helped him get through his darkest moment: “The mind-body connection is everything. Nothing is more important for overall health than being psychologically and mentally strong. You have to be willing to make certain sacrifices. But you also have to be open, receptive, and ready to embrace whatever comes your way. What does it take to come back? Patience and resilience: the courage to try again.” Words that today, in light of his run in Washington, sound like a prophecy come true.
Musetti’s return to the court is also good news for the Italian tennis movement as a whole, which the Carrara native himself celebrated with pride. Recognizing Jannik Sinner’s role as a role model, Musetti stated: “Jannik is our leader: he guides the entire Italian tennis movement. Of course, Fabio Fognini paved the way several years ago. Then Matteo Berrettini threw open the doors to the Grand Slams. They’ve carried the movement forward for all of us—in terms of awareness, investment in tennis and the players, but also in terms of our ambitions and dreams. I’m very happy to be part of the team.”
