Inter Transfer Market: Calhanoglu’s Contract Extension Is a Priority, But There’s One Factor to Consider

After a turbulent summer, marked by numerous transfer rumors and the real possibility of returning to his home country, Calhanoglu remained at Inter and, right from his first appearances, has proven to be a key player for coach Chivu. His absence due to injury against Udinese was keenly felt (he’ll also miss the match against Roma).

For Inter, renewing the Turkish midfielder’s contract is a priority, on par with those of Dimarco and Carlos Augusto. Calhanoglu’s contract with Inter expires at the end of the current season, so there’s no time to waste.

However, Inter doesn’t want to break the bank. First and foremost, Calhanoglu isn’t a spring chicken. He was born in 1994. Furthermore, as his recent injuries have shown, he needs to be managed carefully from a physical standpoint. He certainly doesn’t have the stamina he once did, which is only natural for someone with his mileage on the field.

In short, a renewal is on the table, but the terms will be influenced by his age and, above all, by the midfielder’s physical condition. Of course, it remains to be seen whether Calhanoglu will accept Inter’s offer or decide, at the end of the season, to test the waters elsewhere as a free agent—thereby opening the door to signing a financially lucrative contract (which would likely be the last of his career).
