Jannik Sinner: Andrea Scanzi really goes all out
In an interview on the YouTube show “Foot Fault,” Andrea Scanzi spoke once again about Jannik Sinner, who will soon return to the court after a long break following his Wimbledon victory and a knee injury: “I like Sinner’s personality. In a world where rudeness, cunning, and political incorrectness reign, I like Sinner’s journey and his personality.”
“Technically, he’s a beast—a phenomenon. He handles himself exceptionally well and manages to put tennis front and center in a soccer-obsessed country… I really like someone like that. The fact that he’s a perfect example of professionalism and a champion makes him very appealing to me. He’s not much of an aesthete, but I like him a lot.”
The controversies over his residency in Monte Carlo, the Davis Cup, and the Olympics: “They strike me as odd but don’t surprise me. First and foremost, there’s a huge element of ignorance about tennis; now everyone’s an expert on a sport they don’t understand. Then there’s the ‘sour grapes’ factor: you see this 22- or 23-year-old guy who has it all—money, fame, a girlfriend—and you’re jealous. You look at your own life and take it out on him. That’s what fuels the controversies over the Davis Cup and the Olympics.”
“We’re a country that loves unpresentable politicians and even votes for them, that loves unpresentable TV personalities and ham actors and goes to see them in the theater—but then, when it comes to Sinner, this fierce feud breaks out, which is completely crazy.”
According to the journalist from *Il Fatto Quotidiano*, the two Grand Slam titles won by Zverev don’t change the pecking order: “The gap between Sinner and Zverev is enormous under normal conditions. Zverev is a very good world No. 3. He was brilliant at capitalizing on a series of once-in-a-lifetime coincidences. Good for him—opportunities should be seized—but the two true phenoms are Sinner and Alcaraz; Zverev is the best of the rest, but let’s not kid ourselves: he capitalized on a year that I hope won’t be repeated.”
