Jürgen Klopp has officially begun his tenure as Germany’s head coach, and he’s done so with an unprecedented move: he’s announced two separate rosters, totaling 44 players, divided according to the four Nations League matches that will kick off his tenure between late September and early October. This decision confirms the new head coach’s intention to immediately broaden the player pool, evaluate different profiles, and build a flexible squad capable of adapting to the demands of various matches.
Klopp, appointed following Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation after Germany’s disappointing elimination in the World Cup round of 16 against Paraguay, has chosen to base his approach on a very broad pool of players. The first roster will be used for the matches against the Netherlands and Greece (first leg), while the second will be used against Serbia and in the second leg against Greece. This strategy aims to evaluate as many players as possible, alternating between experienced players, up-and-coming young talents, and players who have been on the sidelines in recent years.
In this context, however, one specific decision stands out: the absence of Nicolò Tresoldi. The Club Brugge forward, who in recent months had publicly stated his desire to represent Germany rather than Italy despite strong interest in him from the Italian national team, does not appear on either list. This decision has surprised many observers, as his name was considered one of the most likely to be included in the new era, especially given the player’s desire to commit to the Mannschaft.
