While waiting for Jannik Sinner, tennis rediscovers one of its greatest allies
The road back to the top often involves extremely tough obstacles: Holger Rune knows this all too well, having finally seen the light again after a very long ordeal that lasted eleven months. This news is also of particular interest to Jannik Sinner: the world’s No. 1 tennis player is himself undergoing rehabilitation from an injury that has kept him off the court for the past two months, and on the tour, the Dane has been one of Sinner’s staunchest supporters during this difficult time.
At the Royal Stage in Hillerød, Rune returned to represent Denmark in the Davis Cup World Group I tie against Bulgaria, securing a victory in his first official match since rupturing his Achilles tendon on October 18, 2025, during the ATP 250 in Stockholm.
Having since slipped to No. 144 in the world rankings, the 23-year-old Dane defeated Iliyan Radulov, ranked No. 596 in the world, without much difficulty, winning 6-3, 6-3 in just under an hour and a half of play. At the end of the match, Rune’s smile spoke louder than any statement. The match against Radulov was primarily a test to assess his physical condition and regain his competitive rhythm after nearly a year away from the court.
He passed the test with flying colors, though the most challenging test will come on Saturday: the Dane will face Grigor Dimitrov, who won the first singles match of the series against Elmer Moeller after a three-set battle that ended 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Even among Sinner’s fans, Rune’s return is being welcomed with particular enthusiasm due to the mutual respect he has built over the years with the South Tyrolean. During the difficult weeks surrounding the Clostebol case, the Dane was among the players who most openly defended the Italian, siding with him on multiple occasions. Furthermore, the two have trained together on more than one occasion, with Rune consistently expressing great admiration for the Italian player.
Now, as fans eagerly await seeing the champion from Sesto Pusteria back in full action, Rune’s sporting comeback represents one of the most inspiring stories of this season’s finale.
