Sofia Goggia is back to making her fans dream: her month-long hiatus is over

Sofia Goggia is back on social media and, most importantly, back to physical training. After a difficult few weeks, the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic champion has resumed posting Instagram Stories from Sicily, where she is staying in Favignana to gradually get back into shape. Amid breathtaking sunsets, photos of the island, training sessions, and expressions of gratitude to the facility hosting her, the first signs of a fresh start are emerging.

The skier from Bergamo has resumed training at CrossFit Egadi, guided as always by her longtime trainer Matteo Artina. It was a very cautious first session, following the hiatus that has inevitably affected her preparation in recent weeks. Goggia herself described the session at the gym as “a first glimpse of training after a month of inactivity.”

An important step forward after a difficult period. Since early September, in fact, Goggia has had to deal with two viral infections, which were only detected after a series of tests conducted upon her return to Italy from Argentina. This setback came at the worst possible time in her preparation and caused her to miss over three weeks of training on the snow, leaving her particularly worn out.

Now, however, the situation finally seems to allow her to look ahead. Her return to training will necessarily be gradual, with light workloads and athletic training aimed at regaining fitness and consistency. The stories posted by Favignana detail this new phase: Goggia has returned to training, but without rushing things.

It remains to be seen how long it will take for her to return to the slopes. The answer will likely come only shortly before the season opener in Sölden, scheduled for October 24, when it will be clearer whether the skier from Bergamo will have had the chance to complete a few days of giant slalom training. In Argentina, before her hiatus, her training on the wide gates had shown very positive signs. Now the goal is to gradually make up for lost ground and determine, as she goes, whether conditions will allow her to take her place at the Rettenbach start gate.
