A terrible illness, which he fought with great courage and dignity, ultimately claimed Antongiulio Giove’s life. He had turned 56 in August. A few years ago, he took the reins of the Alberto Giove Cup, a major youth basketball tournament named after his brother Alberto, who died at a very young age as a result of a terrible skiing accident.

The Alberto Giove Cup, which has always been held on the main court in Monza, has been one of the most significant events in basketball for nearly forty years. Founded in 1988, the event has grown steadily to become an international tournament capable of attracting some of the most promising Italian and foreign basketball teams.

It is a valuable opportunity for many young players, who can test their skills against opponents from different schools and sporting traditions, gaining an important experience not only from a competitive standpoint but also on a personal level.

The tournament has its roots in a tragic story: that of Alberto Giove, a promising young player for Gerardiana Basket Monza, who died in 1988 at just 15 years old in a mountain accident. It was his father who spearheaded the creation of the tournament, choosing to transform the memory of his son into an initiative dedicated to young people and their passion for basketball. Since then, Alberto’s name has remained linked to an event that has spanned generations, preserving the emotional and commemorative value that inspired its creation.

Over the years, the Coppa Giove has earned a prominent place in the world of youth tournaments, attracting prestigious clubs and teams from various European countries. Among the teams that have taken part in the competition are Olimpia Milano, Pallacanestro Cantù, Bayern Munich, and numerous teams from Eastern Europe—regions where basketball boasts a particularly deep-rooted tradition. The presence of clubs of this caliber has helped enhance the event’s prestige, offering participants the opportunity to compete against some of the best basketball programs.

“The Lombardy Regional Committee, through President Enrico Ragnolini and the Executive Board, extends its deepest condolences to the family on the passing of Antongiulio Giove. The Giove Tournament, now in its 36th edition, has always been a model of excellence in the international and regional youth basketball scene, helping to promote the highest positive values of the sport,” reads a statement from FIP Lombardy.
