What’s simmering among the heavyweights?
The heavyweight category, after a stalemate, is poised to set the boxing world ablaze in the coming months. After the resounding failure to agree on a unification match between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk, there are plenty of athletes who would like a shot at the world title.
Young Daniel Dubois will be the first to try the assault on the 4 belts held by Usyk., WBA, IBO, IBF and WBO champion. The British boxer was immediately catapulted into this opportunity, currently occupying the first position as a challenger in the WBA rankings. Negotiations on this match already seem to be well under way, and the officialdom could come soon.
WBC champion Tyson Fury, on the other hand, is looking for a challenger who will stimulate him pugilistically but at the same time fill his wallet. Various hypotheses are under consideration at the moment. The first name, partly by virtue of his recent victory over Jermaine Franklin, is that of Anthony Joshua. A British derby in a sold-out stadium, such as Wembley, in front of 90,000 spectators would be a grand spectacle, as well as a big deal in terms of business.
“AJ” himself after the recent success called his own rival, suggesting that he speed up the pace before time wears down his own physiques. Should this challenge not go through, here comes the possibility of a fourth match between Tyson Fury and former WBC champion Deontay Wilder. A match, this one, that on a competitive level would have little to say given the superiority shown by the British giant throughout the trilogy. But you know: “The Bronze Bomber” is still the boxer with the highest KO percentage in heavyweight history and anything could happen, even with one punch.
Then there would be the various crossovers that could materialize should these challengers not have their own titular chances. In that case we could be looking at these possible duels:
-Joshua vs Dillian Whyte
-Joshua vs Deontay Wilder
-Deontay Wilder vs Andy Ruiz JR
-Deontay Wilder vs Joe Joyce
Of course then the cards could be reshuffled should we see yet another reversal of the Fury vs. Usyk affair in the coming weeks, which could lead to a resounding new big match deal, perhaps for June. But that, as of today, is another story.
