Matteo Berrettini exults: ‘Me the happiest, now ready to go again’
It was a slump-busting victory, but it represents only the beginning.
Matteo Berrettini breathes a sigh of relief and relaunches. After his 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Maxime Cressy in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters 1000, the Roman expressed all his satisfaction, assuring that this will only be the first step in his relaunch.
“The first to be happy with this success is me,” Berrettini said hot on the heels of his Monte Carlo victory. “The beginning of my year was tough, for so many reasons. However, I am here again doing what I love to do, which is to play tennis. I am happy with this win, the level was high and it is not easy to face Maxime. So I’m really happy to beat him.”
Berrettini then framed his current level after the many physical problems he has faced recently, “I am very satisfied with the progress I have made. I’m doing a great job with my team, but I still need to put some matches and some wins in my legs. This is the only way to gain confidence and stamina. I then grew up on clay, and it’s a surface I love playing on.”
Another aspect addressed by the Roman concerns the ups and downs experienced in the last months of his career. “Looking at the results, I can’t complain. I injured my right hand and had to have surgery. Recovering is not easy, especially when you suffer an injury so many times. You need a lot of energy to find yourself again, and there wasn’t enough left. But now I feel good, the tank is full and I am ready to start again,” Berrettini assured.
