Novak Djokovic: hefty fine after bad gesture at Wimbledon
Hefty fine for Novak Djokovic by Wimbledon organizers after the Serbian tennis player smashed his racket during the Championships final against Carlos Alcaraz in the tight fifth set.
The former world number one, frustrated after losing his serve, had hit a post on the Central net with the racket, destroying it and also risking injury. The Serb had taken a warning from the umpire on the occasion.
The BBC revealed that the All England club has decided to sanction Djokovic with a 7200 deuro fine, which will be deducted from the 1.175 million euro maxi prize Djokovic will receive for making it all the way to the final.
After the match Djokovic, in a much more serene tone, praised Alcaraz: “I can say I have never played with someone like that, I am honest. Roger and Rafa had their incredible strengths but also some weaknesses, Carlos is a complete player with incredible adaptability…. Which I think are the key to longevity and a successful career on all surfaces.”
“Someone in the last year has said that there are some elements of Roger, Rafa and myself in his game. I agree with that. In fact, I say he basically sums up the best of the three of us. He has this extraordinary mental strength and maturity that for a 20-year-old is just impressive.”
