Carlos Sainz rejoices with Charles Leclerc: “Overjoyed for him.”
A home victory, welcomed with great pleasure.
Carlos Sainz rejoices for Charles Leclerc, winner of the Monaco Grand Prix in a Ferrari after never having stood on the podium of his home race. Not only that: the Monegasque had not triumphed in Formula 1 since July 2022 (in Austria), while his teammate had since managed to collect two successes (Singapore in 2023, Australia this year). And his mood, after the third place in the Principality, è excellent.
"I am delighted to see Charles the winner of his home Grand Prix,” Sainz said on the sidelines of the Monaco podium ceremony.
All weekend he drove masterfully. And I am happy to share the podium with him, everyone in Ferrari deserves the result we were able to achieve".
Sainz then told of his race management in Monte Carlo, spent without taking risks from Lando Norris fourth, but also without taking any against Oscar Piastri who finished second. "I tried to put pressure on him,” the Ferrari Spaniard explained, “But there was not the margin to try to overtake him".
Moreover, the battle between Sainz and Piastri had experienced its peak at the start, with a contact that without the restart would have cost the race to the #55 Ferrari. "We were really on the limit, and on the first lap I had a bad time. Fortunately è everything passed when they gave me back the third position. Then the race è restarted, and the pace was as good as we imagined. On these roads, forò overtaking was impossible".
