Olympics, Angela Carini tearfully withdraws in controversy match
Angela Carini è tearfully withdrew in the match of controversies against Imane Khelif in the women’s boxing tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The challenge had been preceded by controversy over the Algerian boxer, who was admitted by the IOC to the Games despite a very high testosterone level. The 25-year-old from Naples decided to withdraw after just 46 seconds in the first round after being punched in the face.
"This for me is not è a defeat, being here, stepping over those ropes è an honor – said l'Azzurra – . Me conditioned by controversy? I am no one to judge and I have nothing against my opponent. I had a task and I performed it even if she didn't make it. Everything that è happened before the meeting absolutely did not affect".
"I no longer felt like fighting after the first minute. I started to feel a sharp pain in my nose. It è not like me to give up, but just because I couldné t I said enough and ended the fight. I got into the ring for my father, last Olympics my father was dying, this was my Olympics and I wanted to walk the last mile. If I stopped I did it only for my family".
Soì her coach Emanuele Renzini: "It would have been easier not to show up, becauseé all of Italy had been asking her not to fight for days. But Angela was motivated and wanted to do it. Of course, at the draw, when she met her opponent, she told me 'it's not è right'. But here today there wasn't any premeditation".
