Benetton makes a splash: Agustín Creevy

Benetton Rugby makes a prestigious purchase. The green-and-white franchise has announced the signing of Agustìn Creevy. The hooker, who will join on Monday, Oct. 21, has signed a contract until June 30, 2025. This is a’high value addition for the Lions. Creevy è one of the world’s strongest hooker in the past 15 years. The 39-year-old Argentine è has been the symbol of the Pumas and boasts an unparalleled resume.

Born in La Plata on March 15, 1985, 180 cm tall and 108 kg, Creevy began playing rugby in Argentina with San Luis, a team from his hometown, in the role of third line. In 2007 the first move overseas, signing his first professional contract with the French team Biarritz. He stayed in France for two years managing to play only six games, also accomplice to a shoulder injury suffered in his second year. Here, then, is where Agustìn metamorphosis occurs in 2009: he changes roles, under the suggestion of the Argentina coach, who at the time was Santiago Phelan. Biarritz then releases him from his contract, letting the player return to his home country and adapt to his new position. Creevy thus returns to wear the jersey of his club team in La Plata.

Weeks pass and Creevy fully convinces in the hooker role, thanks to an accurate throw-in, a dominant presence in the scrum and an innate flair for helming the drive to goal, as well as a consistent contribution in the open field. After adjusting to his new role, Creevy returned to France to play briefly with Clermont as a medical joker. In 2011 the Argentine played with the Pampas XV and won the 2011 Vodacom Cup.

From the fall of 2011 to 2013 Creevy returned to the French league to wear the Montpellier jersey 34 times, scoring three tries. Two years later he joined the English side Worcester; with the Warriors he played two seasons, collecting 28 appearances and four goals.

In 2016 Creevy returned again to Argentina and became a pillar of the Jaguares franchise. In four years he accumulated 59 appearances, scoring an impressive 16 goals. In 2020 he decided to settle in England again, this time espousing the cause of the London Irish. In London he plays three years, scoring 28 heavy goals in 68 matches. Last summer his move to the Sale Sharks, also in the Premiership. In his last year he accumulated 14 caps and 5 goals.
But è with the national team that Creevy wrote the most memorable chapters of his career. The hooker has participated in four Rugby World Cups with Argentina, in 2011, 2015, 2019 and the last one in 2023.

In July 2014, Creevy è was named captain of the Pumas and has been Argentina's flag bearer throughout the past decade. Until coming full circle at the end of August at the Rugby Championship during which he è starred in the Albiceleste’s victory over the All Blacks and then played his presence number 110 in the match against Australia. A recordman in appearances with the Argentine national team, Creevy è a true symbol of Argentine rugby.

Now Agustìn has decided to live a new chapter in his rugby life, accepting the court of Benetton Rugby and will wear the Lions’ jersey until June 30, 2025.
