One-month suspension for Iga Swiatek: WTA’s note
The Women's Tennis Association (WTA), which regulates the main women's professional circuit, released on Thursday, Nov. 28, an official note, following the decision by the International Tennis Integrity Association to suspend world No. 2 Iga Swiatek for one month.
"The WTA notes the decision by the International Tennis Integrity Association (ITIA), which administers the Tennis Anti-Doping Program (TADP), to suspend Iga Swiatek for one month, following the identification of a contaminated regulated drug (melatonin) as the source of her positive test for the prohibited substance Trimetazidine".
"The WTA fully supports Iga during this difficult time. Iga has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to fair play and adherence to the principles of clean sports, and this unfortunate incident highlights the challenges athletes face in dealing with the'use of drugs and supplements".
"The WTA remains steadfast in its support for clean sport, encouraging rigorous processes that protect the'integrityà of competition. It also stresses that athletes must take every precaution to verify the safety and compliance of all products they use, as even unintentional exposure to banned substances can have significant consequences".
"We will continue to work closely with our athletes to provide them with resources to make informed decisions and maintain the highest standards of integrity in our sport" concludes the WTA in the note.
