After being forced to retire during the Madrid Masters 1000 round of 16 against Jack Draper due to a flare-up of an abdominal problem, Matteo Berrettini is ready for anything to take the court at the Internazionali d’Italia after a three-year absence. Speaking at a press conference, among other topics, the Italian player took stock of his physical condition.

“I am fine. I have worked so hard to make it and luckily I play on Saturday so I still have a few more days to be able to recover fully. I haven&#8217t played much since Madrid just to heal from the physical problem and I&#8217m happy with how I feel. Today I had a good practice with Korda. Mentally it is not an easy feeling to handle, because it becomes a kind of kryptonite when you always get injured in the same area” debuted the Roman tennis player.

“You feel weaker to deal with certain things. It is not inflammation, it is a sensitive part of the body and not easy to deal with. I had to think about the good of the season in Madrid, because I was playing very well against Draper in conditions where I get excited. Some times I get stuck; other times I can keep going. I am proud of the work I am doing not to get down” added the blue player.

“Fate is bizarre. I am happy, I saw a little bit of the ghosts of previous years in the days after Madrid. I have been working my head off with my team, which has been crucial for me. We are doing everything we need to do to get in the best possible condition for our debut. It feels great to play here. It’s the city where I was born and raised and where I fell in love with tennis. It’s the place where I first dreamed of becoming a tennis player. I will try to enjoy to the fullest this atmosphere that has been taken away from me for too many years” Matteo Berrettini remarked.
