Giro d'Italia 2025, rankings rewritten: Richard Carapaz mocked

The Giro d’Italia sees its overall standings change, moreover quite some time after the conclusion of the twelfth stage. The arrival of Viadana had in fact experienced some detachments actually the result of a fall that occurred less than 3 km from the finish. Hence a neutralization that could weigh in no small part in Richard Carapaz’s race to the pink jersey.

The Ecuadorian had in fact managed to keep himself in the leading group, along with stage winner Olav Kooij and sprinters such as Casper Van Uden, Ben Turner, Mads Pedersen and others. In the second trunk of the caravan, however, the pink jersey Isaac Del Toro was left, but also bigwigs such as Primoz Roglic, Simon Yates, Juan Ayuso, and even the first Italian in the classification: Antonio Tiberi.

The consequence of all this was seen in the general classification of the Giro d’Italia 2025, which after stage 12 initially included a 49-second recovery of Carapaz over all rivals. In doing so, the South American had moved back to within 1’90” of Isaac Del Toro’s pink jersey, but also on par with Tiberi himself, who was and remains third.

Verified what happened in the agitated finale, the review then resulted in neutralizing the final 49 seconds of advantage of the first trunk of the group over the second. Carapaz thus returns to 1’58” from Del Toro, and among those penalized is Damiano Caruso. Who, thanks to that minute shortfall, would have gained three positions by reappearing in the top 10 of the overall standings.
