CONI, Luciano Buonfiglio is the new president

Luciano Buonfiglio is the new president of CONI, the Italian National Olympic Committee. Born in 1950, he was president of the Italian Canoe and Kayak Federation and an executive of the ICF, the International Canoe and Kayak Federation. He was a canoeist himself and also participated in the Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976.
The committee’s elective assembly was held Thursday morning at the Olympic Preparation Center “Giulio Onesti” in Rome. Buonfiglio won 47 of the possible 81 preferences, already surpassing the absolute majority threshold in the first round, which was decisive in closing the election in his favor. In second place, with 34 preferences, was Luca Pancalli, former president of the Paralympic Committee.
These are Luciano Buonfiglio’s first words as president: “Thank you Giovanni (Malagò, ed.), for what you have done in these 12 years. I would like first of all to emphasize the correctness of Luca Pancalli, to whom goes my affectionate greeting. I cannot fail to emphasize the presence of IOC members here with us: an added value for Italy, a protagonist in the world”.
“We have to be aware of the expertise at this table, we have to commit ourselves to get to the international boards: only if you are there you can be a protagonist. Now facts are waiting for us, we are going to elect a particularly important Board” concluded Buonfiglio, who begins his presidency from today after three terms entrusted to Giovanni Malagò, president from 2013 to 2025.
