Lorenzo Musetti will be the first Italian to take the court Monday night for the US Open round of 16. The concrete court at New York’s Louis Armstrong Stadium will host the Tuscan’s challenge against Spain’s Jaume Munar, currently number 44 in the ATP rankings and fresh off a three-set victory over Belgium’s Zizou Bergs.

The match between Musetti and Munar is scheduled as mentioned for Monday, September 1, and is expected to begin when it is about 9 p.m. in Italy. Whoever of the two manages to prevail will then face the winner of the clash between Jannik Sinner and Aleksandr Bublik.

The previous clashes between the two upcoming opponents at the US Open do not smile too much on Musetti. Indeed, the 23-year-old from Carrara beat Munar in just three sets at Wimbledon in 2023, but otherwise he has been surprised often and often. In fact, the last clash between the two, in Hong Kong in January of this year, saw the Azure lose 2 sets to 1. The same had happened in Antalya, Turkey, in 2021, while the six were even only two in Florence in 2019 and Santiago, Chile, in 2023.

Maiorcan from Santanyì, Munar was born in 1997 and after good early-career promise has struggled to really emerge. In his career he has won 10 tournaments at Challenger level, while in Grand Slam tournaments he has never gone beyond the third round won at Wimbledon this’year. On the ATP singles main tour, his only final to his credit remains the 2021 final at the Andalucia Open in Marbella.
