Milan market, one midfielder returns to base in summer

In the summer Massimiliano Allegri’s Milan could re-embrace Yunus Musah, who was sold in last summer’s soccer market session to Atalanta. The midfielder left Milan to make room for new signings-Samuele Ricci, Luka Modric, Adrien Rabiot, and Ardon Jashari-but in Bergamo he is encountering so many unforeseen difficulties that are preventing him from playing with continuity. Things were going badly under Ivan Juric and, since Raffaele Palladino’s arrival, the situation has gotten even worse.
Yunus Musah has so far collected just 344 minutes spread over 13 appearances between the league, Coppa Italia and Champions League. In Serie A he remained 90 minutes on the bench against Lazio, Cremonese, Udinese, Sassuolo, Napoli, Fiorentina and Hellas Verona, in the other matches with never played more than 25 minutes each. A very complicated situation that evidently denotes the’incompatibility of Yunis Musah’s profile with Raffaele Palladino’s strategies. A return to Milan already in the winter market window is ruled out but, if things do not change, the turnaround in the summer is a foregone conclusion.
The U.S. player has moved to Bergamo on loan with the right of redemption set at 26 million euros but at the moment the chances of Atalanta exercising the option are zero. Raised in the youth ranks of Arsenal, Yunus Musah as a youngster moved to Spain to wear the Valencia jersey. Excellent performances with the Spanish club convinced Milan to invest more than 20 million euros in August 2023 to bring him to Milan, then the Rossoneri shipped him to Bergamo.
In his two seasons with the Rossoneri jersey, he collected 82 appearances and 5 assists. Yunus Musah is a halfback endowed with great stamina and good defensive qualities and, when needed, can also be employed on the right lane, a role he held at AC Milan on several occasions with Stefano Pioli, Paulo Fonseca and Sergio Conceição.
The club has also seen him play on the right side of the pitch.
Yunus Musah made his debut with the U.S. senior national team on Nov. 12, 2020, and since then has collected 47 appearances topped by 1 goal, netted on Oct. 13, 2024 in the friendly played against Panama. Given his English origins, Musah went through the entire youth ranks with the Three Lions national team, then chose the United States.
