Lots of excitement and several Italian nationals involved in today’s Australian Open. The long-awaited derby between Musetti and Sonego saw the Carrara-born player succeed. The number five seed on the draw won over his friend in three sets in what was the third Italian derby in Australian Open history. Musetti thus advances to the third round (last year he exited the tournament right in the third round, so there is every chance to do better than last year’s edition and further improve his ranking).

compared to the d’debut match against Collignon, Musetti raised his tennis level. In the first partial, Musetti was not surprised by Sonego and, while risking something at 5-3, closed well with his serve. Having won the first partial, Musetti begins to play more loosely, putting Sonego in trouble, who misses a few too many shots. On the third set point, he closes 6-3 the second set. Sonego does everything in the third set to come back. He also gets the breaks but Musetti always reacts with class and, on the third match point, takes home the win.

“It was not an easy match against one of my best friends on the tour. However, when you go on the court everyone wants to take the victory. I think it is normal like that. It is not always easy to prepare the match and stay focused on the court, always with the same attitude, especially if then your rival has some physical discomfort. But today I succeeded, I am very happy to be in the third round. But now I want to enjoy this success and take a day off”, the words of a satisfied Musetti.

Nothing to do for the 23-year-old Maestrelli who, in the face of Djokovic, raised the white flag after three sets. The Serb, number four on the scoreboard and winner of the Australian Open 10 times, closed the file with the following partials: 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, showing good tennis.

The Serb’s performance was not good.

Of note was the fine victory of Darderi who, in four sets, got rid of Argentina’s Baez. Having won the first set (6-3), the Azure surprisingly lost the second set (1-6) but immediately recovered, taking home the next two sets (6-4, 6-3).
