Surprising hypothesis for the future of Ettore Messina

The possible return of Rome to top basketball is reportedly taking shape rapidly, involving investors interested in bringing a Capitoline team back to Serie A as early as 2026-27, even through the acquisition of the sports title of another club, and experienced coaches with one name above all in pole position: that of Ettore Messina. According to reports from ‘Il Messaggero’, the’former coach of Olimpia Milano, who resigned at the end of last November, is reportedly ready to return to the sidelines, leading a new sports project.

The Capital is one of the two Italian markets, along with Milan, chosen for the start of the NBA Europe project, and Messina, who knows the NBA world well, is indicated as the main hypothesis to lead the new Roman team, with a role that could be both technical and managerial, on the model of what his “maestro” Gregg Popovich did in the days when Messina was right in the NBA, as assistant coach of the Texan franchise. Rumors speak of contacts already underway with the venture that should bring the company to Rome.

The NBA Europe project, officially confirmed by the top North American basketball league as an initiative designed to create a stable structure on the continent, is looking closely at the Roman market, which is considered strategic in terms of its catchment area, visibility and commercial potential. The new club would aim to obtain a multi-year license in the NBA’s European circuit starting in 2027, after a season that can be defined as “break-in” in the top Italian league, in which it would still participate.

The picture that emerges is that of an ambitious project, backed by interlocutors among whose names are those of Donnie Nelson, Dirk Nowitzki and Luka Doncic, with Messina as the main technical figure. It will be necessary, however, to wait for the outcome of the negotiations to bring the sports title back to Rome, an operation that in any case is not a foregone conclusion given the rather tight schedule.

In addition to Ettore Messina, they would also be thinking of a player to whom to entrust the role of locker room reference: among the names circulated in recent days stands out that of Alessandro Pajola, two-time Italian champion with Virtus Bologna, whose contract expires in June. On the guard from Marche remains, however, the interest of other clubs such as the same Olimpia Milano and Real Madrid.
