Matteo Berrettini: Lady Luck helps Cristian Garin
Lady Luck helps Garin
Since his return after undergoing hand surgery Matteo Berrettini had only won, and the break he took after his triumphs in Stuttgart and Queen’s should have served him well to recharge his batteries ahead of a date he cared deeply about and which in 2021 saw him play a major role.
The positivity a bolt out of the blue: the Roman was to face Chilean Cristian Garin in the first round of Wimbledon. The South American, in last year’s edition, made it all the way to the fourth round: an excellent result that, however, was facilitated by having met specialists on clay.
In Halle and Eastbourne he did not shine, losing in the first round respectively to Sebastian Korda (6-2, 6-3 for the son of art) and Alex de Minaur (double 6-3 for the Australian). In London, for the time being, Lady Luck gave him a hand: he most likely would not have had a chance with Berrettini.
