Atp Florence, family surprise for Matteo Berrettini
Matteo’s younger brother is in contention to enter the main draw at the Florence tournament
Whenever he can, during breaks on the hectic ATP major circuit, Matteo Berrettini misses no opportunity to train with his brother Jacopo, number 896 in the world rankings but with a recent past (in 2019) as world number 388, his best ranking.
Last summer, right after retiring from Wimbledon, Matteo also went in person to attend the 37th Fontana Memorial, 1st Ale Spa Trophy, on the clay of La Meridiana in Casinalbo. The occasion, as some will recall, was also propitious for a meeting, complete with photos, with Sassuolo Calcio players leaving for summer training camp.
Now, a few months later, the Berrettini brothers may be playing the same tournament. That’s right because the organizers of the Unicredit Firenze Open-which kicks off on Oct. 10, with qualifying set for Oct. 8 and 9-have reserved a wild card for the 23-year-old Jacopo for the cadet draw. Giluio Zeppieri, who starred in the Umag tournament when he gave Carlos Alcaraz a hard time in the semifinals, was also included in the tournament’s qualifiers thanks to the same invitation.
