Matteo Trentin won the Giro del Veneto

Matteo Trentin came out on top in the Giro del Veneto and mitigates UAE Team Emirates’ displeasure over Molano’s blown success in the second stage of the Tour of Langkawi (the Colombian, first across the line in the Malaysian stage, was later stripped of victory as an irregularity was found in his sprint).

The Italian race (Padova-Vicenza, 159.8 km) saw its crucial moment at the entrance of the final double circuit, with 15 riders taking the lead: among them were Matteo Trentin and Diego Ulissi.
Ulissi’s work was excellent in keeping up the pace of the peloton and fostering the finish of a surging Trentin.

In fact, the Italian rider smoothly followed a spurt by Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) and the duo thus found themselves leading the race in the final ten kilometers along with Rémy Rochas (Cofidis), Mattéo Vercher (Total Energies) and Alessandro De Marchi (Israel-Premier Tech).

It was Rochas who broke through with 800 meters to go, finding the timely response from the UAE Team Emirates rider, who then launched himself to his third win of the season; sixth place for Ulissi.

“Nice victory, with which I redeem the disappointment of the second place obtained in the last edition. We knew we had a very competitive team, we interpreted the race well and I could count on good legs, as well as exceptional support from Ulissi,” Trentin commented after the race.
