Matteo Berrettini, in an interview granted to Corriere dello Sport, also addressed his use of social media. “On social I’m on it, but not so much,” he pointed out. “I read, some times I smile, some times I get hurt. More than anything else I am surprised by the nastiness. I wonder how one can lash out so much at someone.”
“I’m disturbed by the lack of human sensitivity, as if we are machines that have to do just that,” added the Wimbledon 2021 finalist: if we fail we are to be scrapped and if we win we are to be put on a pedestal. In the end I go to sleep anyway and the next day I am calm, but I am sorry that sometimes tennis is seen this way.”
But there is also the flip side of the coin. “On Tuesday I heard from Lorenzo Musetti, he wanted to know how I was doing. I was very pleased. Thanks also to Davis, a friendship is being created between us off the court,” Berrettini concluded.
Matteo Berrettini, nicknamed “The Hammer” on the ATP circuit because of the power of his serve and forehand strokes, decided to go all in on tennis thanks to the valuable advice of his younger brother Jacopo, also a professional tennis player. Since the age of 14 he has been training with Vincenzo Santopadre, who is still his current coach.
Berrettini is considered the best Italian player ever on grass, being the only one to have reached the Wimbledon final in 2021. He also boasts the second-best ranking ever for an Italian tennis player, having reached the No. 6 position in the ATP rankings in January 2022.
