F1, Alpine: Fernando Alonso’s penalty lifted
Alonso’s seventh-place finish in Austin GP restored
Good news for Fernando Alonso and for Alpine. In fact, race officials have cancelled the 30-second penalty imposed on the Spanish driver at the end of the Grand Prix at the U.S. circuit in Austin.
Thus restored the seventh position gained in the race by the driver of the French team, who had been relegated to 15th place. The Asturian therefore returns to the points zone, relegating teammate Esteban Ocon to 11th position.
The protest filed by Gunther Steiner’s Haas was in fact declared as ‘illegal’ because it arrived out of maximum time, that is, more than thirty minutes after the checkered flag.
Fernando Alonso was convinced of this, commenting in a press conference, “It’s simple, the protest is not legal because it was presented out of maximum time. Logical.”
“The complaint of the team led by Gunther Steiner should not have been considered,” reads the FIA documentation.
