Davis Cup, Matteo Berrettini as Jannik Sinner: Filippo Volandri provides clarity
Matteo Berrettini, like Jannik Sinner, will also not be present in Malaga
After having to cope with Jannik Sinner’s withdrawal, the Italian Davis Cup team must record on Sunday the official forfeit of Matteo Berrettini, who will not be at the Davis Cup Finals scheduled in Malaga Nov. 22-27 because he has not yet recovered from the left foot injury suffered at the Naples tournament last October.
In his place, non-player captain Filippo Volandri has decided not to call up anyone. The team will consist dinque of four players: Lorenzo Musetti, Lorenzo Sonego, Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli.
“We are very sorry for the absence of Berrettini, who has tried to recover until the last moment showing his attachment to the national team jersey,” Volandri told the official Federtennis channels. “His absence is in addition to that of Sinner, who is also injured. Matteo will be here with us from Wednesday to support the team. I am sure we will be able to cope with these two losses: the boys will give their best and everyone will be ready. I am fortunate to have a competitive team and to be able to make choices regardless of absences. The opponents we will find in Malaga are strong. The U.S., our rivals in the quarters, is definitely one of the most competitive teams, but we will face them with the knowledge that we can play them.”
