Davis Cup, Angelo Binaghi sees the glass as half full
The words of Angelo Binaghi
After Italy’s defeat to Canada, there remained some disappointment that they failed to make the Davis Cup final. However, Angelo Binaghi praised the Azzurri to the microphones of SuperTennis.
“The guys did very well. Sonego resounding, great heart from everyone else starting with Matteo Berrettini, who threw himself on the court I don’t know how,” he said. “If in doubles a couple of points had turned around and we had won, I think we would not have stolen anything. We were up against a great opponent, with Shapovalov and Auger-Aliassime never losing serve in singles or doubles, and that made the difference.”
“Italy did miracles to get to the semifinals with an incomplete team. However, those who were called upon to defend the colors of the national team made themselves very ready. We are among the top four nations in the world and we have a great group of guys with a great desire to win this Davis Cup again,” Binaghi continued.
He then drew a balance of 2022: “It’s great, despite the injuries. The guys won two heavy Atp 500s, Hamburg and Queen’s, and six Atp 250s. We reached two Slam semifinals, Martina Trevisan in Paris and Matteo Berrettini in Melbourne. We have won other major circuit tournaments with the girls. Then there are injuries, and the list is longer than the list of wins.”
“There hasn’t been the resounding exploit that we have been expecting for a long time, but with all these injuries it was hard to expect. However, we have shown that the prospects of Italian tennis are very good, that the movement in perspective can still bring many players to the top. We have ten of the top 24 Next Gen in the rankings. The movement is there,” concluded the president of the Italian Tennis Federation.
