George Cohen died
English soccer is in mourning: George Cohen, world champion in 1966, has died. He was 83 years old.
This is the statement from Fulham, a club in which Cohen played for the duration of his career, from 1956 to 1969: “Everyone at Fulham Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of our greatest ever players – and gentlemen – George Cohen MBE. George made 459 appearances with his beloved Whites, as well as collecting 37 appearances with England, with whom he famously won the World Cup in 1966. All our thoughts are with Daphne, his beloved wife of over 60 years, his sons Anthony and Andrew, his grandchildren and all his family, as well as George’s many, many friends.”
“It is very sad to learn that my friend and England teammate George Cohen has passed away. He was a lovely man. He will be greatly missed,” Hurst, who in the 1966 final against West Germany, posted on Twitter.
