F1, Adrian Newey reveals a Ferrari-related backstory
In the past, Adrian Newey has been close to Ferrari
Adrian Newey, at the end of the 2014 season, had entertained the idea of going to Ferrari to bring his design skills that, from the 1990s onward, allowed him to inscribe his name in the winning seasons of first Williams, then McLaren and finally Red Bull.
Telling the backstory was Newey himself, in an interview granted to Mark Hughes for the British portal ‘The Race’: “At the time I was disappointed with the final result (Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes dominated the year, ed.), I almost made a deal with Ferrari but nothing more came of it… I felt happy at Red Bull, I didn’t really want to change the air, but we had an uncompetitive engine and it was frustrating.”
Keeping Newey’s motivation high was his involvement in Aston Martin’s concept car project, the Valkyrie: “It kept me busy for a while while Red Bull signed the deal with Honda-at that point we had a partner who would allow us to be more competitive, there was no reason to leave.”
