F1, Antonio Giovinazzi returns to a role previously held
Antonio Giovinazzi returns to Ferrari as a reserve driver
Important announcement from Ferrari concerning the last Italian driver to race in Formula 1: Antonio Giovinazzi. The Maranello-based stable has announced that next season, the former Alfa Romeo driver, who has already served as a reserve driver for the Rossa, will return to Ferrari in his old role and will alternate with David Shwartzman. The Apulian and the German will be joined by the two ‘Development Drivers’.
“The 2023 Formula 1 season is just around the corner and Scuderia Ferrari is ready to face it not only with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz but also with four excellent drivers who will fill the roles of Reserve and Development Driver,” reads the note released by the Italian manufacturer through its official channels.
“In fact, a modern Formula 1 team needs to be able to count on a group of drivers to compete at the highest level. A Reserve Driver will be present at every race, a role in which Antonio Giovinazzi and Robert Shwartzman will take turns, who, in order to make the most of the potential of the new simulator active since last year, will flank in the role of Development Driver the very valid pair Antonio Fuoco and Davide Rigon. These are experienced guys who know how to give precise and reliable feedback to the engineers, all the more so since track testing is extremely limited, simulation has become a fundamental tool not only for the preparation of each race but also for the development of the car itself,” the release continues.
