Tour of the Alps, final victory for Tao Geoghegan Hart
Tao Geoghegan Hart (INEOS Greandiers) won the 46th edition of the Tour of the Alps, which ended Friday with the 144.5-kilometer fifth stage from Cavalese and Brunico.
It was here, in 2019, that the Briton had entered the world of great cycling. Then he was second behind teammate Pavel Sivakov, this year the protagonist of a triumph that was never in question, despite a minimal gap in the overall standings. Five days wearing the Melinda Green Jersey, as never before in the recent history of the Tour of the Alps.
That Geoghegan Hart was the strongest, along with his teammates, was already clear in Alpbach, and was reaffirmed the following day at the Ritten Arena in Renon. Those two successes were enough to dig the decisive furrow in the overall standings, because in the last days of the race no one had the strength and courage to attack him. Not Hugh Carthy (EF Education-Easypost), who finished second overall 22″ behind, nor Jack Haig (Bahrain-Victorious), third at 28″.
