F1, Ferrari: Charles Leclerc surprised after pole position

Charles Leclerc took pole position in qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku and will start from the first position in Sunday’s race.

“Pole position? I’m surprised. We came here thinking it would be a very good weekend if we stayed ahead of Aston and Mercedes in qualifying. In the end we are on pole, so it’s really a positive surprise,” Leclerc admitted at the end of qualifying. We must not forget that in the race we will maybe still be behind the Red Bulls, so it will be difficult to keep the lead, but that is the goal. For us drivers it was a very challenging weekend, because there was only one free practice to test. Then you had to be on the ball right away. But the feeling was good from the first moment. Tomorrow? It will be challenging, especially with the averages. We will only have one set, there is no margin for error. The pace seems strong, we hope to learn in Q1 and Q2 and then push in Q3.”
